Medicaid Changes Are Coming
The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is sharing information about two upcoming changes that may affect Pennsylvania Medical Assistance (Medicaid) recipients. Many First 1,000 Days families rely on Medical Assistance for prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric coverage — this is worth knowing about now, before either change takes effect.
The most important step to take now: create a COMPASS account and download the COMPASS mobile app. COMPASS lets you manage benefits online, receive important updates, submit documents, and complete renewals more easily. Make sure your mailing address, phone number, and email address are current with DHS so you don't miss a notice.
Change #1 — New eligibility rules for certain noncitizens, beginning October 1, 2026
Beginning October 1, 2026, some Medical Assistance eligibility rules for certain noncitizens are changing under federal law. If this may affect you:
-
Keep your contact information up to date.
-
Watch for notices from the County Assistance Office.
-
Carefully review any requests for information or documentation.
-
Refer to official DHS resources for the most current eligibility information: Noncitizen Eligibility — PA Department of Human Services
Change #2 — Additional Medical Assistance changes, beginning January 2027
Beginning in January 2027, some Medical Assistance recipients may be required to:
-
Meet new community-engagement (work) requirements.
-
Renew their benefits more frequently.
-
Respond to requests for information from PA DHS.
Not everyone will be affected. Many individuals may qualify for exemptions or automatic exceptions — these changes will not apply to everyone receiving Medical Assistance.
What to do
-
✅ Create a COMPASS account and download the mobile app.
-
✅ Update your mailing address, phone number, and email address with DHS.
-
✅ Watch for notices and renewal information.
-
✅ Respond promptly to requests for information.
-
✅ Complete all required renewals by the stated deadlines.
