A public initiative needs more than an audience.

The First 1,000 Days are shaped by thousands of daily interactions among families, healthcare providers, public agencies, employers, childcare programs, community organizations, and neighbors. No single institution sees the entire system.

That is why Thrive needs many kinds of knowledge.

Parents understand what it feels like to navigate the system. Professionals see where referrals and services break down. Community organizations know which resources families trust. Citizens can ask questions institutions may overlook. Public leaders can help translate learning into action.

Thrive brings those perspectives together to understand what is happening, deliberate about what should change, and help Montgomery County build better connections around children and families.

Join the People’s Commission

The People’s Commission to Make Our Children Healthy is a structured civic process asking:

What does Montgomery County owe the next generation?

Commission participants learn about the First 1,000 Days, listen to family and community experience, examine evidence and competing approaches, identify system barriers, and help develop public recommendations.

You can participate as a parent, grandparent, resident, clinician, educator, student, service provider, community leader, or concerned citizen. No special expertise is required.

Share your experience

Have you tried to find prenatal care, mental-health support, childcare, nutrition assistance, Early Intervention, transportation, housing help, or another family resource?

Perhaps the system worked well. Perhaps it did not. Both experiences can help us learn.

You may share:

• A barrier you encountered

• A resource that helped

• A referral that did—or did not—lead anywhere

• A question families are not being asked

• A community strength that deserves greater recognition

• An idea for improving how services connect

You decide whether your contribution remains private, is summarized anonymously, or may be shared publicly. We will not publish your name or story without permission.

Contribute professional or community knowledge

Thrive welcomes clinicians, doulas, social workers, educators, researchers, public-health professionals, librarians, attorneys, policy specialists, data analysts, faith leaders, employers, and others whose work touches children and families.

You can help by:

• Recommending evidence or local data

• Explaining how a program works in practice

• Identifying an overlooked barrier

• Correcting an error

• Suggesting a question for the Commission

• Connecting Thrive with a community or professional network

• Helping translate technical information for public use

Contributing expertise does not require endorsing every aspect of Thrive. Constructive criticism and competing perspectives are part of the process.

Become a community partner

Organizations can help make the initiative more useful, representative, and locally grounded.

Community partners may:

• Host a listening session or public conversation

• Share trusted resources with families

• Add or correct information in the resource ecosystem

• Invite staff or community members to participate

• Help identify gaps in services

• Review materials for accuracy and accessibility

• Provide appropriate, privacy-protected data

• Collaborate on a practical local project

Partnership does not require surrendering organizational independence or becoming a formal sponsor. We will define the purpose, responsibilities, and limits of each collaboration openly.

Attend a gathering

Thrive will convene public Zoom sessions and in-person gatherings to introduce the newborns, explore Citizen Briefs, hear community perspectives, and deliberate about current choices.

Some gatherings will be educational. Others will invite testimony, discussion, or recommendations. Each event listing will explain what participants should expect and whether advance reading is useful.

You are welcome to attend first and decide later whether you want a larger role.

Help improve the work

Thrive is an initiative in development. The website, newborn stories, Ada, Citizen Briefs, resource listings, and Commission process will improve only if people tell us what is unclear, incomplete, inaccurate, or unhelpful.

You can:

• Report an error or broken link

• Recommend a local resource

• Identify missing evidence

• Question an assumption

• Suggest a person or organization we should hear from

• Comment on the accessibility of the website

• Tell us what would make participation easier

The Thrive in Montco PA Substack is the initiative’s public journal. It publishes newborn stories, Citizen Briefs, Montco Field Notes, Commission updates, invitations, findings, and corrections.

What happens after you respond?

When you contact Thrive:

1. You will receive confirmation that your response was received.

2. We may ask a brief follow-up question to understand your interest.

3. You can choose the level and type of participation that suits you.

4. Participating once does not commit you to an ongoing role.

5. We will ask permission before publicly identifying or quoting you.

6. Professional participation will not be represented as organizational endorsement unless that organization has explicitly agreed.

Thrive is not an emergency, healthcare, legal, or social-service provider. If you are seeking immediate assistance, we will try to direct you toward an appropriate existing resource, but we cannot guarantee access or eligibility.
